Keon’s Coaching Corner:
As the football season begins to wind down and the playoffs approach, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and pressure. This is the time when every rep counts, every decision matters, and the smallest details can be the difference between advancing or going home. But how do we, as players, coaches, and parents, stay focused and complete the task at hand? And, as the season closes, what should we be looking for in the offseason to continue building on this year’s progress?
Let’s dive into how we can stay locked in for the playoffs, set ourselves up for success in the offseason, and consider what truly matters when choosing a training program for your young athlete.
Staying Focused: The Playoff Mentality
The playoffs are a whole new season. Everything you’ve worked for comes down to these moments. Here are some key ways to keep your team focused and ready:
1. Keep the Big Picture in Mind:
- Remind the team that their goal hasn’t changed. Stay focused on the ultimate mission: winning the championship. The work they’ve put in throughout the season has prepared them for this moment. Now, it’s time to execute.
2. Control the Controllable's:
- The noise gets louder in the playoffs. The pressure builds, but the fundamentals stay the same. Focus on what you can control: effort, execution, and attitude. Coaches need to keep players grounded by emphasizing the basics.
3. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare:
- Success in the playoffs comes from preparation. Every practice, every film session, and every drill matters. There’s no room for shortcuts. The team that prepares the best is often the team that comes out on top.
4. Trust the Process:
- Remember, this journey is about growth. Win or lose, the goal is to become better every day. Trust the work, the system, and each other. Play for your teammates and keep pushing forward, even when challenges arise.
Biblical Principle: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23
This scripture is a reminder that our effort and focus should come from a place of purpose, working for something greater than ourselves. Whether in practice or the playoffs, we give our all.
Looking Ahead: Preparing for the Offseason
Once the playoffs are over, the focus shifts to the offseason. This is where true growth happens. The offseason is an opportunity to build on what you’ve learned and improve in every aspect of the game.
What Are My Plans for the Offseason?
As a coach, I view the offseason as a critical period for player development. My focus will be on:
- Individual Skill Growth: We’ll break down each player’s game, identifying areas for improvement. Whether it's speed, strength, or positional technique, the offseason is the time to address these details.
- Mental Preparation: Football is as much a mental game as it is physical. We'll be working on decision-making, game IQ, and leadership development, ensuring players return next season more prepared than ever.
- Building Team Unity: Just because the season is over doesn't mean the bond between teammates should fade. I plan to foster that team environment through group workouts, team activities, and community involvement.
What Should Parents Look for in Offseason Programs?
Choosing the right offseason program for your child is crucial. Here are some things to consider when signing them up for offseason training:
1. Program Growth:
- Look for a program that’s not just about getting kids through drills but one that emphasizes the growth and improvement of every player. Does the program provide personalized attention? Does it track progress?
2. Player Development:
- The offseason is about refining skills and building new ones. A quality program should focus on all aspects of player development—strength, agility, football IQ, and leadership. Ask yourself: Will this program make my child a better player next season?
3. Atmosphere:
- The environment matters. Is it a positive, encouraging space? Does the program build up players, not just as athletes, but as people? The right program will foster discipline, respect, and a love for the game. Find a program where your child feels supported and challenged.
4. Community:
- Look for a program that values being part of a community. Football is a team sport, and players who understand the importance of community and leadership will thrive on and off the field. A strong football program will cultivate this sense of belonging and responsibility.
Biblical Principle: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I with them.” — Matthew 18:20
Football is more than just a game; it’s about community. When we come together with a common goal, with the right attitude and support for one another, we can accomplish great things.
As the season winds down, it’s a perfect time for players, coaches, and parents to reflect on the progress made, the lessons learned, and the road ahead. The playoffs are a chance to showcase the hard work and determination that have been building all season. Regardless of the outcome, it’s how we respond to the challenges and grow from them that will define us.
The offseason is where the real work begins. Take the time to choose programs that focus on growth, development, and community. And most importantly, keep faith at the center of your journey. With the right preparation, mindset, and support, anything is possible.
Biblical Principle: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9
Keep working hard, stay focused, and trust in the process. Success isn’t just about winning the playoffs; it’s about growing, learning, and pushing through adversity.
Let’s finish strong and look forward to an offseason filled with growth and opportunity.
Blessings,
Coach Keon
