Title: What Seeds Are You Sowing This Season?
Every season, whether in sports or in life, we’re all planting seeds. As athletes, parents, and coaches, the question we need to ask ourselves is this: What seeds am I sowing right now?
The Bible gives us powerful wisdom in Mark 4, where Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower:
“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, but because the soil was shallow, when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew, and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” (Mark 4:3–8)
This parable isn’t just about farming — it’s about life. It’s about what we choose to plant, and what kind of ground we let those seeds fall on. Let’s break it down for athletes, parents, and coaches.
For Athletes
Seeds on the Path: When you don’t take practice seriously, or you let distractions steal your focus, your potential is snatched away before it even grows.
Seeds on Rocky Ground: You start strong in the gym, but when it gets tough or the season drags on, you quit. Without deep roots — consistency, discipline, and faith — you can’t endure.
Seeds Among Thorns: Maybe you’ve got talent, but bad influences, unhealthy habits, or negativity choke out your growth.
Seeds on Good Soil: When you stay disciplined, humble, and hungry to grow, your gifts multiply. You not only get better on the field, but you grow as a leader, a teammate, and a person.
For Parents
The seeds you sow at home matter just as much as what happens at practice.
Thorns can look like pressure, comparison, or negativity that weigh your child down.
Good Soil looks like encouragement, accountability, and reminding your athlete that their worth isn’t just in wins and losses but in who they are becoming.
When you nurture faith, character, and resilience, the harvest in your child’s life will go far beyond sports.
For Coaches
Every practice is planting season.
What are you sowing? Are you planting seeds of discipline, respect, and teamwork? Or are you letting anger, favoritism, or negativity take root?
Great coaches don’t just run drills — they cultivate good soil. They create an environment where athletes can grow in skill, confidence, and faith.
The seeds you plant in young athletes can grow into habits and character that last a lifetime.
Reflection
This season, take a moment to ask yourself:
What seeds am I sowing?
Am I helping myself and others grow in good soil?
Or am I letting thorns, rocks, and distractions take root in my game, my home, or my team?
Closing Encouragement
Jesus ends the parable with this promise:
“Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” (Mark 4:20)
When you plant seeds of discipline, faith, and love — whether you’re an athlete, a parent, or a coach — the harvest will always be greater than you can imagine.
So, this season I ask you again: What seeds are you sowing?
