SPRING 7v7 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES – WEEK 2 RECAP

The sun was out, the cleats were flying, and the highlight reels were jam-packed. Week 2 of the Spring 7v7 Championship Series delivered big-time action, breakout performances, and statement wins across every division. With fans lining the sidelines and energy running high all day long at Calgary’s Challenger Park, this spring showdown is heating up fast.

🏆 HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION – BAMA MAKES ITS MOVE

After an undefeated start in Week 1, the Red Raiders hit their first speed bump, finishing the weekend 1-1. But the biggest storyline came from the south: Sr. Bama came to play, finishing 2-0 and establishing themselves as true title contenders.

Leading the charge was Brian Yobo (WR/DB, Centennial High), who earned High School Player of the Week honors for his two-way dominance. Whether it was clutch catches or sticky man coverage, Yobo made an impact on every snap.

Meanwhile, the Trojans stayed consistent. After going 3-1 in Week 1, they duplicated the effort in Week 2 with another 3-1 showing. Their only loss came in a tight battle with Bama, but they’ve officially entered the contender conversation.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Wolverines are still hunting for their first win, now 0-4 across two weekends. But with new roster additions beginning to mesh, a Week 3 breakout may be just around the corner.

🔥 15U DIVISION – SAY HELLO TO KALE LABIUK

One name was on everyone’s lips this weekend: Kale Labiuk. The WR/S and incoming freshman at Croxford High turned heads with explosive plays on offense and rangy coverage on defense. His route running? Crisp. His hands? Sure. His sideline presence? Elite.

Labiuk helped power the SW Trojans to a 3-1 weekend and earned 15U Player of the Week in the process.

When asked what drives him, his response was simple:

“Train soft, play soft. Train hard, play hard.”— Kale Labiuk

He clearly lives that motto every snap.

💪 12U DIVISION – BLUE RAIDERS ARE BACK IN CONTROL

After a shaky Week 1, the Blue Raiders rebounded strong, going 3-0 behind the elite QB play of Pierce Scott Choo-Yin (PSCY). Calm, precise, and relentless, PSCY kept drives alive and the chains moving.

Of course, Cub Scheirman continued to be a human highlight reel—climbing the ladder, diving for balls, and showing off elite athleticism. But this week, it was time for a new star to shine:

“Baby Gronk” Owen Olver delivered four touchdowns and clutch third-down conversions, earning him 12U Player of the Week. He’s PSCY’s go-to and a growing problem for every defense.

10U DIVISION – DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN MODE

The Jr. Blue Raiders made a defensive statement this week, racking up four pick-6s—two each from Eli Stone and Beckett Cool. Their impact was undeniable, and it’s safe to say: don’t throw it their way.

Beckett Cool walks away with the 10U Player of the Week, but both defenders put the league on notice.

Meanwhile, the Jr. Hawkeyes and Buckeyes got big-time performances from Madden Meaney and the exciting Strowger twins, who combined for multiple scores and electric grabs.

And don’t sleep on the Gators—new to the scene but already making noise. Mason Schiffke turned heads with his speed, vision, and playmaking instincts as a WR/DB.

LOOKING AHEAD

Teams are settling in. Stars are emerging. And with just a few weekends left until Championship Saturday, every rep counts.

The series shifts to Glenmore Athletic Park for Weeks 3, 4, and 5. Circle the dates: June 7, 14, and 21.

A huge thank-you to our national partner Prime Hydration and our local sponsor Speedy Apollo Auto Service for supporting Calgary’s youth football scene.

Coaches Corner

Coach Keon’s Coaching Corner: Leadership, Sportsmanship, and Development in Changing Times

In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, the game of football (and sport in general) isn’t just about Xs and Os — it’s about building leaders, showing respect, and growing as individuals both on and off the field. As coaches, parents, and athletes, we are all responsible for fostering a culture that emphasizes leadership, sportsmanship, and development. Here's how we can teach and live out these values in today’s climate.

1. Leading in Changing Times

True leadership goes beyond titles and talent. It’s about influence, service, and responsibility. In a time where uncertainty is common, young athletes need to be empowered to lead by example, speak with confidence, and stay grounded in their values.

How to Teach Leadership:

  • Encourage athletes to lead warmups, team huddles, or film sessions.

  • Model accountability. Let them see how coaches handle mistakes and challenges with humility and purpose.

  • Use real-world examples of leaders in sports and life who lead with courage and compassion.

Coach Keon Tip: Leadership is a choice. It doesn’t require age or a position — just action rooted in integrity.

2. Practicing Sportsmanship in Every Moment

Respecting the game means respecting everyone who plays it. From handshakes at the end of a game to how we talk to referees, sportsmanship is a reflection of who we are. Athletes today are under a bigger spotlight than ever before, and how they handle themselves matters.

Ways to Build Sportsmanship:

  • Celebrate effort as much as victory. Applaud hustle, teamwork, and heart.

  • Teach players to win with humility and lose with grace.

  • Hold everyone accountable — even coaches and parents — to a standard of class and character.

Coach Keon Tip: Sportsmanship doesn’t end when the whistle blows. It continues in the locker room, the classroom, and the community.

3. Developing On and Off the Field

Development isn’t just physical — it’s mental, emotional, and spiritual. Athletes, parents, and coaches must all grow together. The journey of becoming better starts with self-awareness and a desire to improve.

Growth for Athletes:

  • Train with purpose. Focus on areas that need improvement, not just strengths.

  • Stay coachable. Be open to feedback and new techniques.

  • Balance ambition with gratitude.

Growth for Parents:

  • Support, don’t pressure. Let your athlete own their journey.

  • Encourage resilience, not excuses.

  • Be their biggest fan, not their toughest critic.

Growth for Coaches:

  • Learn constantly. Attend clinics, read, and connect with mentors.

  • Coach the whole person, not just the player.

  • Build relationships that last beyond the season.

Coach Keon Tip: Growth is a process. Trust it. Whether you're a parent, player, or coach — keep showing up and doing the work.

Coach Keon’s Final Words

Football is a platform. What we do with it shapes lives. Leadership, sportsmanship, and development aren’t just buzzwords — they’re the foundation of every great team, family, and community. The future depends on how we lead today.

Let’s commit to building better athletes, stronger leaders, and more compassionate humans — one play, one practice, and one conversation at a time.

Quote of the Day: “The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.” — John Wooden
